Recruiting calendar

How recruiting works

SCG recruits new analysts at the start of every fall and spring semester. Select a step to see what happens.

Step 1 of 5

Interest form Happening now

Fill out the interest form to hear when the next application opens.

Step 2 of 5

Application

Submit a complete resume and complete a virtual case. No consulting experience needed. Not sure where to start? Use our resume guide.

Step 3 of 5

Interviews

Two rounds. The first is a team interview where you work through a case in a group. The final round is 60 minutes: 30 minutes of behavioral questions and 30 minutes of case. Prepare with SCG's sample behavioral questions, case framework guide and practice cases.

Step 4 of 5

Decision

Decisions are sent after the final round. SCG is selective: we admit about 2% of applicants. Previous applicants who are still interested and eligible are encouraged to reapply.

Step 5 of 5

Onboarding

New analysts join faculty- and EY-led workshops and complete a benchmarking analysis for the rest of the semester, then take on client projects the following term.

Interview process

Interviews and questions

SCG's interview material covers behavioral questions and case interviews. Practice with the sample questions, the case framework guide and the two practice cases.

Who can apply

SCG recruits new analysts at the start of each fall and spring semester from University of Maryland undergraduates in good academic standing.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Who can join

Do I need to be a business major or have consulting experience?

No. SCG is open to all undergraduates at the University of Maryland who are in good academic standing and meet the semester requirement. Our projects need data science, engineering, design, research and communication skills as much as business skills, and we teach consulting methods in onboarding.

If I've applied once, can I apply again?

Absolutely. We encourage previous applicants to reapply if they are still interested and eligible.

Joining and the process

Does it cost money to join?

No. SCG is 100% free to join. We are funded by the generous support of the Ed Snider Center for Enterprise and Markets and our alumni.

What makes SCG different from other on-campus consulting groups?

SCG's clients are on-campus organizations, so members make lasting changes in the UMD community they are part of. SCG also partners with EY, whose consultants guide every client team.

What does the interview look like?

There are two rounds. The first is a team interview where you work through a case in a group. The final round is 60 minutes: 30 minutes of behavioral questions and 30 minutes of case. Our interview prep page has sample behavioral questions, a case framework guide and practice cases.

Life in SCG

What is life like for members?

Consultants attend weekly general body meetings or workshops, weekly team project meetings, and occasional social outings.

How does onboarding work?

New analysts take part in faculty and EY-led workshops and complete a benchmarking analysis for the rest of the semester. After building a foundation in management consulting and learning how SCG operates, they join the ranks as consultants and take on client projects the following term. Analysts typically stay five or more semesters.

What does the EY partnership mean for me?

SCG partners with EY to train our consultants and expose us to the industry. EY holds workshops on topics useful to SCG, pairs each project with consultants and partners, and connects us to EY recruiters.

For clients

How much do SCG services cost?

Our on-campus client services are always free of charge. Off-campus non-profit clients are eligible for low rates designed to meet the needs of the project.
